Section-Wise Analysis of XAT 2006
English Usage
  • Unlike every year, the XAT verbal section was not driven by vocabulary this year. Instead it was Usage driven and that too Reasoning based
  • New question types like fill in the blank with word that does not fit in. There were 3 Qs of this type
  • 3 jumbled paragraph and 4 critical reasoning questions could have been attempted without much trouble
  • There were 6 Qs on usage based vocabulary
  • There were 5 Reading comprehension passages (including a small dialogue of 3 lines) for 24 marks in all
  • Overall, it should have been possible to score only about 13-15 marks in this section.

Data Interpretation and Reasoning
  • There were 4 sets of DI (3 tables and 1 Pie chart) for 18 marks in all. All of these were very confusing and not worth attempting
  • There were 5 sets of logical reasoning, for 25 marks in all. Some of these were worth attempting.
  • Overall, it should have been possible to score 10-12 in this section.
Quantitative Ability
  • It was not only just the toughest section of the entire paper, but also the toughest quant section among all the papers this year
  • Largely all the questions were individual in nature, on the lines of CAT. However the difficulty level was extremely high
  • You needed a good understanding of functions and algebra to solve these questions. Also some questions were asked on calculus
  • Overall, you could have only score around 8-10 marks in this section

Essay
  • Additional 20 min. given to write a one page essay on, "India has one of the largest pool of talented manpower – but few innovations and patented products"
