IIFT 2006
(26th November 2006)

If CAT 2006 didn't surprise you much, IIFT did it in a style . A new test format with questions having more than one correct answer! Overall, a difficult and time consuming paper, expected to have low cut-off's. A student needed to be alert while marking the answers, as he needed to mark the 'correct' answer option(s) in certain questions and 'incorrect' answer option(s) in certain other questions.

  • 106 Qs, 120 min.
  • 100 marks (33.33% negative for wrong answers to questions that had only one correct answer choice. Questions where more than one answer choice was correct did not have negative marks).
  •  4 sections (first three divided into two parts each). No sectional time limit. Different marking scheme for each section.
  • 4 answer options per question
  • 27 questions had only one correct answer option, while 79 questions had more than one correct answer option. Students would get marks only if they would mark all the relevant ovals in these questions.
Likely Cut-Off
  • IIFT 25

Section-Wise Analysis of IIFT 2006
Verbal Ability
  •  Part (i) had 3 passages with a total of 8 Q's. Part (ii) had 4 Q's on Sentence Completion, 2 Q's on Sentence Correction, 9 Q's on Vocabulary (2 Analogies, 5 Usage and 2 pertaining to Dictionary Usage).
  • Reading Comprehension questions were tough as more than one answer options could be correct.
  • The question on sentence completion was unusual as 2 sentences were given in each question and you needed to pick the word that would fit both the sentences.
  • 'Dictionary Usage' presented an interesting variation. For each word, you were given the 1. Pronunciation (Ironically, they had spelt the word 'Pronunciation' incorrectly!), 2. Meaning and 3. Spelling. You needed to pick up those words where all three were correct.

Quantitative Ability
  • Overall a tough section, with questions on trigonometry and vectors being present.
  • Part (i) had 17 Q's which were simpler than those in Part (ii). The 13 Q's in Part (ii) were lengthy and confusing. These also had more than one correct answer option.
  • The breakup of the questions: 8 Algebra, 5 Permutation Combination, 4 Trigonometry, 4 Geometry, 2 Number Systems, 1 Percentage, 1 Ratio Proportion, 4 Speed, 1 Vectors.
  • The best strategy would be to avoid higher math and some Algebra and solve only 8-10 Q's from Arithmetic and Geometry questions. Part (ii) could be completely avoided to conserve time. For all questions that you skipped in Part (ii), you should have marked answers randomly as this section did not have any random marking.
Data Interpretation
  • It was another tough section and required you to calculate a lot. Almost all the questions were of the multiple correct answer type.
  • Part (i) had 2 sets on multiple bar graphs, one on table and one on combination graph. Each of the three sets on graphs required you to combine data from 6-8 different graphs, while the table required you to check data from 12 columns and 20 rows!
  • Part (ii) was largely reasoning, with the surprise element being Sequential Output Tracing (as seen in Peak Seekers CET tests). The remaining were questions on Analytical Reasoning.
  • Low attempts with a high accuracy was the key out here. You could have solved the Q's on Analytical Reasoning and perhaps one DI set.

General Knowledge
  • All General Knowledge questions were of multiple correct answer type. They covered a wide range of topics.
  • An interesting question type here was the match-the-columns question.
  • You should have attempted all of these questions as there were no negative marks.
