FMS 2007
(21st January 2007)

For all practical purposes, it is the end of the MBA entrance exam season (except for the Maharashtra CET), as FMS was the last major. And in many ways, this last exam was the last nail in the coffin . But, do not worry, in these competitive exams, it is not how you fared that is important. It is how you fared in comparison with how others fared that is important . There was a marked increase in the difficulty level of the paper. As against a cut-off of around 380-400 last year, this year the cut-off may actually be around 280.

  • 175 Qs, 120 min.
  • 700 marks (+4 for every correct answer, –1 for every wrong answer)
  • No sections
  • 4 answer options per question
Likely Cut-Off
  • FMS 280+

Question-Type Wise Analysis of FMS 2007
Quantitative Aptitude
  • Clearly, this was the most difficult quant section to appear in the FMS of the recent years. With 10-12 Q's each on Logarithms and Co-ordinate Geometry, it is no wonder that the exam halls were full of groans. The remaining questions were largely on Complex Numbers and Inequalities. In fact, out of 49 Q's these four topics accounted for as many as 40 Q's. Clearly FMS thinks that mathematicians make the best MBAs!
  • Attempting more than 20 questions in this question-type would be tough, and that too after spending a good 35-40 minutes.

Data Interpretation
  • This question-type  was a saving grace. If you wanted to score full marks in any section in this year's FMS exam, this was it.
  • There were two sets of 5 questions each. Both the sets were a must-attempt. These 10 Q's should have taken around 10 min. of your time.
Logical Reasoning
  • This part of the paper caused many a jitters among test-takers. The questions were time-consuming and confusing.
  • The questions were a mix of Analytical Reasoning (8 sets x 5 Q's), Logical Puzzles (4-5 Q's) and Syllogisms (4-5 Q's). The surprise package was 8 Q's on Decision Making (CET type).
  • Most of the Analytical Reasoning sets seemed unsolvable, as very little data was provided. The only way to solve these questions would be by creating different scenarios.
  • The Syllogisms questions (Conclusions and Courses of Action) could have been attempted without wasting much time. But, the nature of this question lends itself to low accuracy.
  • In this question-type, a student should have attempted only about 2 sets of Analytical Reasoning (about 10 Q's) and all the non Analytical Reasoning questions (about 18 Q's)
  • In all, these questions deserved a total of 40 minutes and an attempt of 22-25 Q's.

Verbal Aptitude
  • The emphasis was largely on Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary, with 36 Q's on Reading Comprehension and around 15 Q's on Vocabulary.
  • The Vocabulary questions consisted of Synonyms, Antonyms, Homonyms, Analogies and Sentence Completion. A striking feature of these questions was the new way in which the questions were asked (The three-pair analogy as against the traditional two-pair ones. Also, the questions where you needed to find either the closest meaning or the farthest meaning, whichever was present in the answer options, presented an interesting new variant). Verbal questions were tricky as the answer options were close. Having a good Vocabulary would have helped a lot.

  • The Reading Comprehension passages were uncharacteristically long and also difficult to read. Most of the questions were inferential and to add to this, a large number of questions had 'None of These' as one of the answer options. You could have attempted a maximum of two passages in the remaining time.
  • A good attempt in this part of the paper would have been around 28-30 in about 35 minutes.
