Section-Wise Analysis of CAT 2005
Quantitative Ability
  • The quant section was characterized by the reduced number of Algebra questions and large number of questions on Arithmetic and Geometry.

  • Though Part A was easier than Part B. Judicious choice of questions could have helped you solve many good questions in Part B as well.
  • There were about 5 questions in Quant that did not require you to have quant knowledge as they were purely logical.
  • It was possible to attempt around 14 questions (6 from part A and 8 from part B) in 40 minutes.

Verbal Ability
  • The Verbal section had a new question type -- the one pertaining to replacing the inappropriate word with the appropriate one.
  • The section was not much different this year than those in the previous years, but it was characterized by closer answer options and hence debatable answers.
  • There was a judicious mix of questions on Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Reasoning
  • Both parts were moderately difficult. Part A had one RC passage followed by 4 questions, 3 questions on Jumbled Sentences and 3 questions based on inappropriate usage of words.
  • Part B had two passages followed by 4 questions each, 4 questions based on completing the paragraph in the most appropriate way, 4 questions based on appropriate replacement of words and 4 questions based on identifying the grammatically correct sentence
  • 20-22 questions (8 from part A and 12-14 from part B) could easily have been attempted in this section in 40 minutes.
Data Interpretation
  • The Data Interpretation section was marked by the conspicuous absence of graphs. Hence the scope of solving questions visually was less. It required you to read a lot and data was not readily available.
  • Part A had three sets, 2 tables and 1 bar graph followed by 3, 3 and 4 questions each.
  • The question based on graphs was easy and worth attempting. You needed the concept of averages to solve this set.
  • Part B was distinctly difficult compared to part A, due to the presence of a large number of sets based on reasoning.
  • Data Sufficiency questions were absent, but were asked in a DI set (pertaining to companies and their market shares).
  • In Part B, there were two sets based on Tables and three Caselets. Each set was followed by 4 questions.

  • In the entire section, one could have attempted 12 questions (4 from part A and 8 from part B) in 40 minutes.
